Google AI Mode Links Update: What Site Owners Should Do

Google's October 2026 changes add more links and an official-sites test to AI Mode and AI Overviews. What changed, what didn't and how to earn the click.

Quick answer

On 15 October 2026 Google said it has substantially increased inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews and will show them higher more often. It is also testing a section that surfaces official websites for a task and expanding news carousels. No core update was confirmed in October; the last ranking update was September's spam update.

Key takeaways

  • Google is adding more, and more visible, links to its AI answers, which gives clear, authoritative pages a better chance of a click.
  • A test section at the top of some AI answers highlights official sites, with a note on why each link is useful.
  • News carousels in AI features are rolling out to more countries and languages and highlight users' Preferred Sources.
  • Google says no special markup or AI text files are needed: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Google's dashboard shows no core update since May 2026; the September 2026 spam update took 13 days and 16 hours.

What did Google change in AI Mode and AI Overviews?

In a post titled "More ways to connect with the web from Search", Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management, announced five changes on 15 October 2026:

  • More inline links: Google says it has made "continued and substantial increases" to links inside AI responses and is launching updates to show them higher in responses more often.
  • Official websites section (test): a dedicated section at the top of some AI responses that surfaces the official site or page for a task, with context on why each link is useful.
  • News carousels: prominent carousels of timely articles in AI features are rolling out to more locations and languages globally, highlighting each user's Preferred Sources. Google says use of Preferred Sources has grown more than 7x since the start of the year.
  • Related links: links at the end of some AI responses get image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
  • Creator names (test): clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode, linking to their Search profiles.

Google did not give rollout dates beyond the announcement, and only the news carousels were described as expanding to more countries.

Was there a Google core update in October 2026?

Not as of 24 October. Google's Search Status Dashboard lists no October ranking update. The most recent entries are:

UpdateStartedDuration listed
September 2026 spam update24 September 202613 days, 16 hours
August 2026 spam update18 August 20262 days, 16 hours
June 2026 spam update24 June 20262 days, 1 hour
May 2026 core update21 May 202611 days, 21 hours

Forum reports of traffic swings in October remain unconfirmed. If your traffic changed, check the dates against the dashboard and your own site changes before assuming an algorithm update.

What changed in Google's Search documentation?

  • 1 October: the guidance on using generative AI content gained information from the Search Quality Raters guidelines.
  • 21 October: the page on controlling what you share with Google Search now lists the robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, X-Robots-Tag and the Search generative AI control together.
  • 23 October: URL structure best practices clarify using hyphens rather than underscores to separate words.

None of these is a new ranking rule, but together they point the same way: write for people, make pages easy to crawl and understand, and use the standard controls if you want to limit snippets.

How can my website get linked in Google's AI answers?

Google's AI features documentation is direct: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. In practice:

  1. Be the official page for your own tasks. If someone asks how to book, get a quote, check prices or contact you, the answer should live on one clear page on your site, not only on a directory or social profile. That is the kind of page the official-sites test is designed to surface.
  2. Answer the question near the top. Lead each section with a direct answer, then add the detail. Our AEO and GEO guide covers the format.
  3. Check indexing and snippets. Make sure key pages are indexed in Search Console and are not blocked by nosnippet, a low max-snippet value or noindex by mistake.
  4. Fix the technical basics. Server-rendered HTML, fast pages and clean, descriptive URLs; see our technical SEO checklist for Next.js.
  5. Publishers: encourage Preferred Sources. If you publish news, readers who choose your site as a Preferred Source are more likely to see you in the expanded carousels.

What does this mean for small and new websites?

More links in AI answers means more chances to be clicked, but Google has not said how those links are chosen. Our view: specific pages are the best bet for a new site, such as a clear pricing page, a service page for one task, or a guide that answers one question well, rather than broad pages competing with established sites.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no new machine-readable files are needed. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Partly. Google includes clicks and impressions from AI features in the Performance report's overall Web search totals, but does not report them separately, so watch landing-page trends instead.

Was there a Google algorithm update in October 2026?

Google has not confirmed one as of 24 October. The latest listed ranking update is the September 2026 spam update, which started on 24 September; the last core update started on 21 May 2026.
