WordPress 7.2: Release Date, New Features and How to Prepare

WordPress 7.2 is due on 8 December 2026. The security, block and admin changes that matter for business websites, and a checklist before you update.

Quick answer

WordPress 7.2 entered beta on 20 October 2026, with release candidate 1 planned for 17 November and the final release on 8 December 2026. It adds Application Password security improvements, a Description List block, design tools such as custom block states, an extensible Site Editor and a new default theme, Ipsum. Test it on staging before December.

Key takeaways

  • Schedule: Beta 1 on 20 October, RC1 on 17 November, final release on 8 December 2026. It is the last major WordPress release of 2026.
  • Security: email alerts when an Application Password is added, warnings on non-HTTPS sites and SameSite cookie support.
  • Editor: a Description List block, server-rendered Table of Contents, custom block states and responsive style states.
  • Developers: five @wordpress/components items are deprecated for removal in 7.4, and wp_kses() is being rebuilt on the HTML API.
  • Not included: the React 19 upgrade is unlikely to land fully, and collaborative editing is not on the 7.2 roadmap.

When is WordPress 7.2 released?

MilestoneDate
Beta 120 October 2026

Dates can move during the beta. Sites with automatic major updates enabled may update soon after 8 December, so plan testing in November.

What's new in WordPress 7.2?

  • Application Passwords: site owners get an email when one is added, WordPress detects non-HTTPS environments, and default_role values are safer. These matter because Application Passwords are a common way for integrations, and attackers, to reach the REST API.
  • Cookies: SameSite cookie support, which helps reduce cross-site request risks.
  • Blocks: a new Description List block, server-side rendering for the Table of Contents block and keyword search in the Icon block.
  • Design tools: custom block states, responsive style states, form elements in Global Styles and a view of inherited styles.
  • Admin: a more extensible Site Editor, more DataViews and DataForms work, and new icons replacing Dashicons in the admin bar and menu.
  • Performance: prefetching replaces script and style concatenation, plus dynamic galleries and more client-side media processing.
  • Default theme: Ipsum, ending the year-based theme names such as Twenty Twenty-Five.

What changes for WordPress developers?

  • Deprecations: Divider, ResponsiveWrapper, Scrollable, ZStack and Elevation in @wordpress/components are deprecated and scheduled for removal in 7.4.
  • Renamed prop: MediaUpload's unstableFeaturedImageFlow becomes featuredImageFlow; the old name follows the same removal path.
  • Sanitiser rebuild: wp_kses() is moving to the HTML API (targeting 7.2 or 7.3). The wp_kses_force_legacy_parser filter restores the old behaviour temporarily if a plugin breaks.
  • Database: NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES is turned off by default.
  • AI features stay in plugins: the Abilities API and MCP Adapter continue in separate plugins rather than core 7.2.

How should I prepare my business website for WordPress 7.2?

  1. Take a full backup of files and database, and confirm you can restore it.
  2. Clone the site to staging and install the 7.2 release candidate there in November.
  3. Update plugins and your theme first. Check page builders, forms, SEO and caching plugins, which are the usual sources of breakage.
  4. Test key journeys: contact and enquiry forms, checkout, logins and anything that sanitises HTML, because of the wp_kses() rebuild.
  5. Review Application Passwords under each user's profile and revoke any you do not recognise.
  6. Update on a quiet day after 8 December, then check Core Web Vitals and error logs.

Recent plugin breaches show why updates should not wait: see our breakdown of the Rank Math Pro and UpdraftPlus incident. If your site is slow or hard to maintain, compare options in Next.js vs WordPress for a business website.

Frequently asked questions

When will WordPress 7.2 be released?

The final release is planned for 8 December 2026. Beta 1 was released on 20 October and release candidate 1 is planned for 17 November.

Will WordPress 7.2 break my plugins?

Most well-maintained plugins should keep working, but plugins that use deprecated components or depend on the old HTML sanitiser may need updates. Test on a staging copy before updating your live site.

Does WordPress 7.2 include collaborative editing or React 19?

No. The WordPress developer blog says collaborative editing is intentionally not on the roadmap and the React 19 upgrade is unlikely to land fully in 7.2.
